Rising Prices Of Petroleum Products In Nepal

Issue 14, April 01, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

March 28, 2012: Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has once again increased the prices of petroleum products effective on Tuesday, March 27, 2012.

Petrol has gone up from Rs 116 per liter to Rs 120, diesel and kerosene to Rs. 89 per liter from Rs 85. Cooking gas remains at Rs. 1,415 per cylinder of 14.5 kg and aviation fuel at Rs.109 per liter.

Spokesperson for the NOC Mukunda Dhungel has said that the price rises of fuels have been due to the losses the NOC has been bearing due to the higher prices of oil at the international market; even after the price rise, the NOC will be having a loss of Rs. 1.03 billion per month, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.

With the rise of the prices petroleum products, the NOC will be making a profit of Rs. 3.77 per liter of petrol sold, and Rs. 4.88 per liter of kerosene. However, the NOC will continue to lose Rs. 10.54 per liter of diesel sold. Similarly, the NOC makes a loss of Rs. 563.40 per cylinder of cooking gas sold.

The transport service providers will soon increase the bus fares, taxi fares and so on. Thus, the high prices of fuels will be soon transferring to the commuters and consumers of goods that need to be transported from considerable distances.

So-called students have rolled up their sleeves to take on the government for forcing to roll back the price rises of petroleum products. CPN-UML-aligned All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU) staged demonstration at Tri-Chandra (TC) Campus and Amrit Science Campus this afternoon chanting anti-government slogans and enforced a chakkajam (traffic shutdown) protesting against the price rises of the petroleum products, ‘HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE’ reports on March 27, 2012. Nepalese students have been very smart to involve in the politics on the orders of the political parties they are affiliated rather than engaging in heir studies for better future. They behave like mercenaries to shut down the traffic and other people’s businesses for meeting their demands.
