Thugs Vandalized Office Of Republica And Nagarik In Kathmandu
By KTM Metro Reporter
December 20, 2012: some thugs claimed to be the ‘Shiva Sena’ have stormed the offices of the newspapers such as ‘Republica’ in English and ‘Nagarik’ in Nepali today, and thrashed the chief editor, other editors and officials before trying to burn down the offices.
According to the news posted on nagariknews.com today, these thugs were furious at the news about the possible misuse of “the properties belonged to the former king Birendra, and then transferred to the trust set up for bringing all the assets of the royal families to this trust and use them for the benefits of the common folks” published in ‘Nagarik’ today. The news in question was really about the current government’s attempt on distributing the land transferred to the trust to the tillers for extracting some monetary benefits but apparently not concerning the Shiva Sena.
We understand ‘Shiva Sena’ is for saving the Hindu cult. They were for saving the monarchy, too, as the monarchy had been synonymous with the Hindu religion. However, the news they had said to protest was about the possible misappropriation of the land formerly belonged to Birendra. It has nothing to do with the religion and the monarchy they were supporting.
The reason for vandalizing the offices of ‘Republca’ and ‘Nagarik’s is shrouded in mystery. The police have arrested 12 thugs. It remains to be seen how the police would move the cases against the thugs following the rule of law or following the directives of the high officials. If the police take the order from the high officials rather than following the rule of law would mean these thugs were really the thugs sent by the minister or somebody in the high position.
Such an attack on the media house has been only a few days after the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) stated in its annual report of 2012 that none of the reporters was killed in Nepal this year indicating the safety of the reporters and the media houses but obviously it is not so as shown by the thugs attacking the ‘Nagarik’ offices.
Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai needed to take strong actions against the today’s attackers on the media house in Kathmandu, and protect the reporters and the media property if he were to strengthen his office, and to be stronger than his opponents.
