Top Leaders For Consensus Politics
By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu
April 29, 2010: Federation of Nepal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) has held an interaction of the leaders of the three major political parties such as UCPN-Maoist, NC, and CPN-UML with the common folks in Kathmandu on April 28, 2010. Nepalese TVs have aired the program live for three hours.
Chairman of UCPN-Maoist is flanked by Deputy Chairmen Mohan Vaidya ‘Kiran’ and Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, Acting President of NC Sushil Koirala is flanked by Krishna Prasad Sitaula and Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat, Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal is flanked by Ishwor Pokharel and Pradip Gyawali at the dais.
All nine leaders have answered the questions of the common folks. Replying to the questions, they have promised to come to a common understanding for the consensus politics by Friday, April 30, 2010 and then celebrate the May Day together.
It has been already two years since the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007 has made the provision for the majority rule they have been talking about the consensus politics but they have not been able to reach consensus on many things even when the last date of promulgating a new constitution has coming nearer every day. Since then the leaders of political parties have been moving to the opposite directions rather than coming to closer.
The main obstacle to the consensus politics has been the current government according to the UCPN-Maoist leaders whereas the NC leader Sushil Koirala has been saying that he is for supporting the current government. However, Chairman Jhalanath Khala is always saying that his Prime Minster Madhav Nepal is ready to leave the job for the consensus politics but Madhav Nepal has been strengthening his position spending millions of rupees if not billions.
Madhav Nepal has amassed millions of rupees from the change in price of sugar. He increased the price of sugar from Rs 50 per kilogram to Rs 90 for the sugarcane-crushing season to benefit the mill owners obviously for benefiting himself, too. After the completion of the purchase of sugar from the mill owners, the government has decreased the price of sugar to Rs 65 thus benefiting the price difference of Rs 25 per kilogram. This has been daylight loot Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has done. This has been possible because the government has the monopoly on buying and selling sugar.
So, it is hard to believe that the economically and politically corrupt Prime Minister Madhav Nepal will given in to the demand of the UCPN-Maoist for vacating such a lucrative position.
