CIAA Files corruption Case Against Police Officers

June 8, 2011: Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a corruption case against 36 police officers including three former IGPs at the Special Court charging them with involving in the irregularities such as not following the rules, and paying unusually high prices for the low quality and expired Armed Personnel Carriers and materials purchased for the Nepalese Police Personnel of the peacekeeping mission in Darfur of Sudan under the UN causing the loss of Rs 288.16 million to the  Police Welfare Fund three years ago, ‘gorkhapatra’ of today writes.

CIAA has demanded the recovery of Rs 288.16 million and its interests from the defendants and fines equivalent to the amount of the loss from them, and maximum jail term of 10 years for the officers and additional three years for the top officers following the Anti-corruption Act of 2002.

These equipment and materials purchased for the Nepalese Peace Keeping Mission in Darfur have not been used so far because of the substandard equipment and espired materials. The UN has not reimbursed the amount to the Nepal Police stating the equipment and materials are substandard and not usable.

Incumbent police officers are automatically suspended after the corruption case is filed against them at the Special Court following the Anti-corruption Act of 2002.
