Grafton Peace Pagodas In New York and Massachusetts

Issue 41, October 9, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

October 3, 2011: Buddhist monks and nuns of the Nipponzan Myohoji order marked an 18th anniversary of the Grafton Peace at pagodas in New York and Massachusetts on Saturday according to the news posted on the Benningtonbanner.com

In the Saturday's celebration, more than 30 monks and nuns from the local area and other countries such as Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, England, and Japan participated. The Grafton temple was crowded for the event, which included traditional Buddhist ceremonies as well as interfaith services, music, and a potluck meal.

On Sunday morning in Leverett, Mass., monks and nuns of the same order celebrated the opening of a new temple at the New England Peace Pagoda: the first pagoda in North America built in 1986.

While commemorating the opening of the Grafton pagoda, the event also served to celebrate the work of Buddhists toward peace and reflect on recent tragedy and natural disasters.

A monk from Kathmandu, Nepal brought a relic of Buddha.

Interfaith services included two Muslim exchange students from Afghanistan as well as Israel, Christian, Hindu, and Jewish prayer.
