India Joins UNSC As A Non-permanent

Issue 02, January 09, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

January 3, 2011: from the first of January 01, 2011, India, Germany, Portugal, South Africa and Columbia have become the non-permanent members of the 15-member UN Security Council (UNSC) for the two-year term; their non-permanent membership will end in December 2012, zeewnews.com writes quoting PTI.

India has got a non-permanent member on the UNSC after 19 years. It has been trying to play a key role in the global affairs and even attempting to be a Permanent member of this powerful world body. During his India visit, US President Barack Obama has made public the US support for India for its permanent membership on the UNSC.

The 10 non-permanent members are from the regional groupings for two-year term. The current five non-permanent members are Bosnia, Brazil, Gabon, Lebanon and Nigeria.

The five permanent members of the Security Council are the US, France, China, Russia and Britain. Except for China, other Permanent Members have endorsed India for a permanent seat on the expanded Security Council. However, China is reluctant to do so, and has the veto power to reject the India’s permanent membership on the UNSC.
