Regmi National Peace Award to Prachanda and International to Jimmy Carter
The Board of the “Dr. Dilli Raman Regmi National Peace Award Academy” awarded the “Dr. Dilli Raman Regmi National Peace Award of 2008” to Chairman of the CPN-Maoist Prachanda for his contributions to restoring a lasting peace, setting up a democratic federal republic of Nepal, and implementing the agenda of the Constituent Assembly according to “The Rising Nepal” of June 16, 2008. The award carries a purse of one hundred thousand rupees and a plaque with golden inscriptions.
Similarly, the Board decided to present the ‘Dr. Dill Raman Regmi International Peace Award of 2008’ to former US President and Noble Peace Prizewinner Jimmy Carter for his contributions to the peace process in Nepal. Former US President Carter had played a crucial role in pushing the peace process through various activities of the Carter Center’s office in Nepal.
Regret At Unifying Two Nepali Congress Parties
Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala regretted unifying two Nepali Congress parties into a single party, and attributed the defeat of his party to the unification. He said that he agreed the unification of the two parties based on the 60:40 ratio. However, the other party had deceived his party in the election for a Constituent Assembly causing the defeat of his party.
Students’ Guts
Students belonging to Nepal Students’ Union affiliated to the Nepali Congress vandalized two state-owned cars in Kathmandu on June 19, 2008 during the protest against the rise in the prices of petroleum products. The students broke the windowsill and other widow glasses of the car the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal was riding at Bagh Bazzar. The Chief Justice had to take a cover from the attack of the students in the nearby building. Fortunately, he was unhurt.
