Handicraft Items 46 Percent of Nepalese Exports

December 1, 2013: Trade and Export Promotion Center stated that the handicraft export had been of Rs. 2.74 billion in the fiscal year 2012. It is 46 percent of goods exported from the country, according to the RSS news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com’.

 

This information was shared at the interaction event titled 'Role of Handicraft Industries in Poverty Alleviation' held by the Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal in Kathmandu Saturday.

 

Speaking at the event, Joint Secretary to the Ministry of Commerce and Supplies Deepak Subedi put the stress on the need for promoting handicraft industries to earn foreign currency and reduce trade deficit. He also suggested modernizing the traditional handicrafts and increasing production of handicrafts based on ancient art and culture. Joint Secretary Subedi said that the Ministry of Commerce and Supplies has been providing handicraft industrialists with training and other incentives for the promotion and development of the handicraft industry.

 

President of the Federation Hem Ratna Shakya said that they were facing problem of producing goods in time due to the lack of skilled laborers and the undue pressure from various trade unions. President Shakya demanded the government to provide concession on the import of raw materials for the handicraft industry.
