Conference On Hydropower Development

August 27, 2013: speaking at the two-day conference on power held jointly by Independent Power Producers' Association Nepal (IPPAN), PTC India Ltd, and Non Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) and supported by the Government of Nepal, Ministry of Energy and the Board of Investment in Kathmandu yesterday to mobilize the international and external resources for the hydropower development of Nepal, President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav said that the power development strategy should be targeting at the poverty alleviation, eradication of illiteracy and resolving unemployment, according to the news in ‘gorkhapatra’ of today.

 

Finance Minister Shanker Prasad has said that the government has been working on ending the load shedding in three years doubling the budget for the energy sector for this fiscal year 2013, and improving the polices for the hydropower development in the country.

 

Energy Minister Umakanta Jha has said that importing energy from India during the dry season and exporting energy to India during the wet season is under negotiation.

 

Speaking at the conference, acting ambassador of India Jayadeep Majumdar has said that Nepal is rich in the potential hydropower; so, India is ready to assist Nepal in the hydropower development in any way Nepal wants, according to the news in ‘gorkhapatra’ of today.

 

Chinese ambassador to Nepal has said that Nepal has great potential for hydropower and tourism development; so, Nepal needs to take the advantage of developing China and India; and all three countries need to go hand-in-hand for the bright future of all the countries.

 

Ambassador of Norway to Nepal has said that Norway has been providing assistance to Nepal for inclusive development, and Norway could transfer technology for hydropower development in Nepal.

 

President of Independent Power Producers' Association Nepal (IPPAN) Dr. Subarna Das Shrestha has said that hydropower development is required for reducing the import of the expensive petroleum products, for industrial development, for alleviating poverty, for creating jobs and for developing a lasting peace.
