Fifth Day Of Shutdown Of Nepal

May 6, 2010: today also, from the early morning, the Maoist cadres have been in the field to enforce the shutdown of the entire country. The local media have reported that the incidents of fighting between the Maoist cadres and other groups have broken out briefly in some places. The serious one has been in Birgunj where the Hindu group has burned down the vehicle the Maoists have been using but the fight has come under control.
In Kathmandu, the Maoist cadres have been marching from different areas to Sundhara for a mass rally. The media have reported that the participation of local people called Nevah has been significant in this march. They called this a ‘red march’.
Speaking to the reporters, spokesman for UCPN-Maoist Dinanath Sharma has said that the UCPN-Maoist cadres will not be proactive but will react strongly to the attack on them; the NC and CPN-UML leaders have used the hooligans to counter the Maoists rallies. He has also said that the NC and CPN-UML leaders are not willing to come to a common understanding so the political deadlock continues.
Indian Ambassador to Nepal Rakesh Sood has met with Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda at the residence of Prachanda today in the morning. According to the local TV report, Ambassador Sood has shown interest in playing the role of a mediator in the meetings of the leaders of the three major parties such as UCPN-Maoist, NC and CPN-UML for breaking the current political deadlock.
US Ambassador Scott H DeLisi has met with Deputy Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Dr. Baburam Bhattarai today. They have discussed the current political deadlock; the US diplomat has shown keen interest in helping the Nepalese leaders in breaking the current political deadlock according to the local media reports.
The Maoist cadres have enforced the shutdown of the entire country for the fifth day today in the name of the movement for ‘peace and constitution’ demanding the immediate firing of Prime Minister Madhav Nepal. The Maoists have been successful to fill up the streets with their cadres on the fifth day, too.
