Jahalanath Khanal’s Flip-flop

Issue 42, October 18, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On October 13, 2009, speaking at the press conference held by the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist and Leninist (CPN-UML) of the Myagdi district in Beni, Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal has said that his party has been always ready to make any sorts of sacrifice to end the current political deadlock. He has also said that the current political deadlock will soon end as the leaders of the United Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-Maoist) are also committed to writing a new constitution.

Jhalanath Khanal has been the main source of the current political deadlock, as he has betrayed the then Prime Minister Prachanda not supporting his actions against the undisciplined Chief of Army Staff despite his commitment to support the actions rather leading the leaders of the eighteen political parties to the President and urging him to abuse the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007 to save the job of the high ranking soldier.

Chairman Khanal has also said that Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda has proposed him to be the Prime Minister. If you read the public speeches of Maoist leaders you will find that they are for forming a government under their own leadership. Similar rumors have spread that Prachanda has proposed Girija Prasad Koirala for Prime Minister but Prachanda has publicly denied doing such a thing.

Chairman Khanal has also said that the country will be in grave crisis if the legislature does not pass the budget for the fiscal year 2009 (2066) by the mid October; so he called on all leaders to come to the consensus politics whereas his Finance Minster Surendra Pandey has said the country will not have any problem even if the budget is not passed for two months. Whom to believe?
