President Makes Offerings To Lord Pashupati

Issue 07, February 14, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On February 9, 2010, President Ram Baran Yadav has visited Lord Pashupati at Chabahil in Kathmandu and made ‘maha sankalpa’ to initiate the celebration of ‘Shiva-ratri’. As the head of state, Mr. Yadav has made offerings to Lord Pashupati and set aside the items to be offered to ‘sadhus’ and other ascetic men and women visiting Lord Pashupati on the Shiva-ratri day.

The celebration of Shiva-ratri starts on the four days before the Shiva-ratri day and four days after ends. Hundreds of thousands of devotees from different parts of Nepal and neighboring countries visit Lord Shiva on this occasion. On the Shiva-ratri day alone, tens of thousands of devotees visit Lord Pashupati.

On February 9, 2010, sadhus and ascetic men have to take a shelter in a warmer place because of the drizzling throughout the day. They cannot stay at the bonfire under the rain. They have been upset by the cold climate on the first day of the Shiva-ratri celebration.

The state-run Pashupati Area Development Trust provides all the ‘sadhus’ and ascetic men and women with food and firewood for bonfire for the days of the celebration of the Shiva-ratri.

People believe that Shiva-ratri is the birth anniversary of Lord Shiva because he appeared in a human form on this day. So, devotees celebrate this day as the birth anniversary of Lord Shiva but he has never been born, as he is a universe and omnipresent and omnipotent for Hindus.
