Treat Corrupt Person As Murders: Gupta Suspended From His Party Chairman

February 23, 2012: former minister for Information and Communications Jayaprakash Prasad Gupta has not only lost his office and the seat in the parliament after the Supreme Court of Nepal convicted him of the corruption case and sent him to jail for one and a half years and imposed on him a fine of Rs 8.4 millions but also the position in his party.

Mr. Gupta was the Chairman of the Madheshi People’s Rights Forum-Republican (MPRF-Republican). In a meeting held on Wednesday, February 22, 2012, MPRF-Republican has decided to suspend Mr. Gupta from the office of the chairman of the party, and get it endorsed by the Central Committee meeting of the party. The Central committee meeting is expected to choose an acting chairman of the party, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.

Speaking at a program held at the Reporter’s Club in Kathmandu yesterday, senior lawyers have demanded enacting strong laws with provisions for a sentence of 20 year-jail term and confiscating the properties of the people convicted of corruption cases, as the current law concerning corruption is weak, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.

Former president of Nepal Bar Association Bishwokanta Mainali has said that the corrupt persons should be treated as murderers, and punished them accordingly; referring to the corruption case involving Chairman of MPRF-Republican Jayaprakash Prasad Gupta, he has said that corruption cases should not be treated as political, regional, ethnic and communal issues. Mr. Mainali also demanded that provisions should be made in laws for taking actions against the justices and officials of the Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA) in case if they were found involved in corruption, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.
