Issue 52, December 27, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

December 23, 2009: Defense Minister Bidhya Bhandari has assured the relatives of Major Niranjan Basnet indicted for killing a minor Maina Sunuwar, of not taking actions against him as he has only followed the order according to the Nepalese private press. Recently, relatives of Major Basnet visited Defense Minister at her official residence seeking her assistance in acquitting Major Basnet.

After finding Major Basnet was indicted for killing a minor, the UN has discharged him from duty at the UN Peace-keeping Mission in Chad, and escorted him back to Nepal for putting him on trial for the murder charge. International human rights organizations have been urging the government to turn over Major Basnet to the civilian court for trail.

Prime Minister Madhav Neal has instructed his Defense Minister for turning over Major Basnet to the police for producing him at the Kavre District Court. Obviously, Defense Minister is not in a mood to do so rather she has allowed the Nepal Army to set up a three-member court of inquiry possibly for covering up the crime of Major Basnet.
