Nepalese Press And Convention Of Journalists

Issue 19, May 08, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

May 4, 2011: opening the 23rd Convention of Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) in Kathmandu, Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal has committed to ensure the security of journalists and media owners. Nepalis have seen the killings of media owners and journalists because they have attempted to expose the misdeeds of the politicians. Cadres of major political parties often threatened and even roughed the journalists that have dared to write the things they did not like. So, Mr. Khanal can ensure the security of journalists only if he is sincere to his commitments otherwise it will be another lip service of Mr. Khanal.

Speaking at the same platform, Speaker Subash Nemwang has said that the Nepalese journalists have played a vital role in toppling the dictatorial monarchy and transferring the nation into a republic. He has also asked the journalists to put pressure on the political parties for completing the peace process and the writing of a new constitution.

Some other speakers at the same platform have said that the journalists need to follow the values of journalism for presenting impartial news and views to save the democracy from anarchism.

In Nepal recently, the private media have lost the credibility because they have been feeding the wrong news and have been insincere to the consumers of the news and views following the views of the political parties they support blindly.

Only alternative left to the people is to rely on the state-run media. Naturally, the state-run media follow the government policies and principles of the party that runs the government again making the news and views put in the state-run media biased. So, some people have started asking the government for making the state-run media autonomous.
