June 13, 2013: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has repealed the decision on increasing the capacity of the Trishuli 3’A’ Hydropower from the 60 MW to 90 MW at an additional cost of Rs 4 billion. The construction of the 60 MW Trishuli 3’A’ Hydropower is going on at Rs 8 billion.
Three trade unions of the NEA has been protesting the decision on increasing the capacity of the Trishuli 3’A’ Hydropower by 30 MW at an additional cost of Rs 4 billion. Trade Union leaders have been saying that the Chinese contractor had offered to build the additional capacity of 30 MW at Rs 2 billion. So, the NEA has decided to award the contract of building additional capacity of 30 MW at Rs 4 billion to share the Rs 2 billion among all the characters involved in building the Trishuli 3’A’ Hydropower. Leaders of the trade unions also claimed that the contractor also would be freed from paying the fine of Rs 800 million for not being able to complete the construction of the Trishuli 3’A’ Hydropower as scheduled in the contract. Former energy and finance ministers went to chairman of the Interim Election Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi to protest against the decision on increasing the capacity of the Trishuli 3’A’ Hydropower.
Speaking to the anchor of the ‘antar-sambad’ of Radio Nepal today morning, Executive Director of NEA has said that the decision on expanding the capacity of the Trishuli 3 ’A’ Hydropower from 60 MW to 90 MW has been made based on the benefits for the NEA but the NEA has revoked the decision yesterday following the protest of the trade unions. He said that the future contractor would not be able to build the hydropower at the same price. The construction of the Trishuli 3 ’A’ Hydropower is going on at the lower price than the prices of the hydropower plants built by private companies. So, he hinted at the possibility of the hydropower mafia working against the decision on the Trishuli 3’A’ Hydropower to get it cancelled and make it at the price of their hydropower plant in the future.
