Issue 53, December 30, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 27, 2012: Central Investigation Bureau of the Nepal Police today arrested four persons hired by the bank cashier Khagendra Basnet involved in the December-21-robbery drama at the Bank of Kathmandu, Tulsipur, Dang. The four arrested are Prakash Pariyar: a resident of Gorkha, Sushil Rokkaya of Surkhet, Prem Tamang of Ramechhap and Minur Tamang of Ramechhap. They were caught from different places in Kathmandu. Bank-employee Basnet confessed at the police custody that he hired professional robbers to rob the bank at the cost of Rs.2, 500,000, according to the news posted on thehimalayantimes.com.

DSP Dinesh Acharya revealed that bank-employee Basnet had been hatching a plot to stage a bank-robbery drama to cover up the embezzlement he made in the bank during the past two months. “In a bid to materialize the robbery plot, the bank cashier launched a manhunt to hire a few daring goons through Rokaya and arrived in Kathmandu on December 14 to reach an agreement,” he informed.

Basnet hired Pariyar, Rokaya and Tamang trio for the job and took them to Dang promising them one-third of the amount ‘robbed’. The hired goons with the backing of Basnet scanned the bank and made a sketch for entry and exit from the bank after the robbery.

“On Friday, the gang brandishing toy guns broke into the bank at around 6:00 pm and overpowered bank manager Rishi Shrestha and security guard Prem Nepali. Eventually, Basnet handed a bag containing cash to them,” DSP Acharya said. CIB has recovered Rs 8.67 million from the house of Bohora in Dang and Rs 50,000 from Pariyar so far. DSP Acharya said though the bank had claimed the police that Rs 20.6 million was missing from the counter, the exact amount of money robbed from the bank was yet to be confirmed. “It is under investigation. We suspect that Basnet had embezzled a lot more before the robbery drama was staged,” he said, according to the news posted on thehimalayantimes.com.
