Ethics of Nepalese Ministers

Issue 32, August 10, 2008

BY KTM Metro reporter in Kathmandu

President of Nepali congress and Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala attended the SAARC Summit held in Colombo, Sri Lanka on August 02 and 03, 2008, despite he had resigned from the position of Prime Minister and the President has accepted his resignation and informed the Constituent Assembly.

Similarly, Finance Minister Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat also of the Nepali Congress in the capacity of Foreign Minister attended the SAARC meeting with his spouse. Dr. Mahato has the pleasure of being with his spouse even in the high-level two-day meeting at the expense of the taxpayers’ money.

On Monday, August 04, 2008, Minister for Education and Sports Pradip Nepal of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist and Leninist (CPN-UML) led a Nepali Olympic team to Beijing, China. He along with other Ministers belonging to the CPN-UML jointly tendered resignations on the moral ground after the debacle of the CPN-UML in the election for the Constituent Assembly held on April 10, 2008. He along with  his spouse would enjoy watching Olympic Game and 10-day stay in Beijing at the expense of Nepalese taxpayers’ money and at the cost of his own moral.

All these ministers are of the old opportunist stock. They had behaved dubiously and unscrupulously in the mid 1990s and afterward after the parliamentary election when none of the political parties garnered majority seats in the parliament. Their current behavior would not come as a surprise to the people who knew the dirty politics they had played buying and selling parliamentarians.
