Getting Lo Manthang On the List Of World Heritage

December 25, 2011: Department of Archeology (DoA) has been making preparation for enlisting Lo Manthang as another UNESCO World Heritage Site (WHS), ‘The Rising Nepal’ of December 24, 2011 writes. Lo Manthang will be the fifth Nepalese site to get enlisted on the world heritage site list.

Lo Manthang constructed in the 15th century on a plateau at 3800 meters above sea level was the capital of the former Kingdom of Lo. The main monuments that qualify for the world heritage are the palaces and monasteries of Jampa Lakhang and Thupchen Lakhan dating back to the 15th century and the monastery of Choede Lakhang from the 18th century. The area was off limits to foreigners until 1992. Even today only a limited number of tourists visit the area.

Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square and Bhaktapur Durbar Square, two Buddhist shrines: Swayambhu and Boudanath and two Hindu temples: Pashupatinath and Changunarayan are on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites (WHS). In addition, the Lumbini: the birthplace of Lord Buddha is on the list of the world heritage.
