Delay In Rehabilitation Of Haliyas

August 31, 2013: speaking at the media orientation on 'advocacy for liberated haliya and their issues' began in Dhangadi yesterday, General Secretary of National Liberated Haliya Society Federation Iswar Sunar has said that haliyas have been forced to migrate to India to avoid becoming haliyas again, as the government has delayed the rehabilitation of liberated haliyas: a form of bonded laborers in far western Nepal, according to the RSS news posted on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com’.

 

Speaking at the same event, Chief of the Land Reforms Office Kailali Laxman Kadayat has said that the far western Nepal is home to the largest number of the haliyas: former bonded laborers and the rehabilitation has been delayed due to the delay in identification and certification.

 

Central coordinator of liberated hailya rehabilitation and monitoring task force Hari Sripaili has said that many haliyas are yet to be identified and certified; so, most of the time has been spent on certification and data collection on haliyas.

 

Chief District Officer of Kailali Bed Prasad Lekhak has accepted that the rehabilitation of haliyas has been delayed, and he pointed out the need for the media to putting pressure on the government to speed up the rehabilitation work.
