Thermal plant to Mitigate power shedding

Issue 52, December 28, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On Wednesday, December 24, 2008, the Government of Nepal decided to give permission for setting up several thermal plants for generating at least 200 MW power to mitigate the current power shortage in Nepal the Kantipuronline.com reported on December 25, 2008. The government endorsed "National Energy Crisis Reconciliation Working Plan of 2065" for short-term, mid-term and long-term power generation programs to mitigate the energy crisis. The government has opened an option to the State-run Nepal Electricity Authority and the private sector to build power plants at various places for which the government will provide a grant of Rs 9.6 billion to the builders.

The power cuts have been hitting the national economy hard, as the industries and businesses did not run smoothly due to the power cuts. Even if the government has to provide the builders of the thermal plants with subsidy on power generation it is worth doing so in view of its contribution to the national economy.
