Reward for Marriages

Issue 29, July 19, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

The Finance Minister has included rewards of Rs 100, 000 to a person for marrying a dalit, and Rs 50,000 to a man for marrying a widow but has not proposed anything to a man marrying a divorced woman in the budget for the FY 2009.

Some women have harshly commented on the proposal of the Finance Minister for rewards for marrying dalits and widows stating such cash rewards will bring distortion in the society, as some insincere men may trick dalit women to fake marriages only to receive rewards and then let such women go on their own. They have complained that the government has not been even able to stop some criminals from marrying women and then trafficking them to the Indian brothels and sell them there.

They have said that the reward for marrying widows is even worse, as it hurts the widows dedicated to their deceased husbands. In the Nepalese society, widows marrying other persons after the death of their husbands are not so many.

Some other people believe that the rewards for marrying dalits and for marrying widows will boost the morale of some men and women who really come out of the patriarchal Nepalese society and live independent lives. However, they also have complained that the Finance Minister has not included anything for marrying divorced women.
