Submitting Report Of State Restructuring Commission To Constituent Assembly

Issue 12, March 18, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

March 13, 2012: leaders of UCPN-Maoist, NC, and CPN-UML have agreed on Chairman of Constituent Assembly (CA) Subhas Nemwang submitting the report prepared by the State Restructuring Commission (SRC) on the states Nepal to divide into for federalism to the CA for discussion. To this end, they also have agreed on amending the CA procedure.

The SRC has submitted its report to the prime minister, and the prime minister in turn submitted it to the Chairman of the CA.

The report has provoked hot discussion on the Nepalese media. Most of the NC and CPN-UML leaders have said that it was a useless piece of document, as it contained a number of states that went against the interest of these guys. In fact, three members of the commission have submitted a different report on the state restructuring suiting to the interest of the NC and CPN-UML.

The NC and CPN-UML guys want Nepal to divide into the states bordering north south without the names of any ethnic groups. However, the report prepared by the SRC contained 11 states: some of them named along the ethnic lines. The UCPN-Maoist and UDMF leaders have accepted the report prepared by the SRC with some changes to be made in it.

Chairman of CA Subash Nemwang has canceled his foreign trip scheduled for attending a meeting of the inter-parliamentary union to be held in Uganda starting on March 31, 2012 in view of the pressing need of his presence in Nepal to complete the constitution writing, as the time of doing this task has been running short.
