February 18, 2010: the UN agency for defending press freedom has said that the murderers of Nepalese Media Operator Jamin Shah and those people issuing death threats to journalists and editors covering his death must be brought to justice for the media pluralism according to the UN News Center. Two men on a motorcycle have shot dead Head of Channel Nepal TV and cable TV company Space Time Network Jamim Shah on February 7, 2010 and has seriously injured his driver.

The managing director and the editors of its two daily publications such as Kantipur and the Kathmandu Post have received threats by telephone calls and emails to stop coverage of the killing. Similarly, the editors of the daily newspaper Himalayan Times and its sister publication in Nepali the Annapurna Post have been received the threats.

“I condemn the murder of Jamim Shah,” UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Director-General Irina Bokova said. “Mr. Shah was a key player in the development of television in Nepal which, like every country, relies on media pluralism to foster free and informed debate.”

“I am also deeply concerned about threats to journalists reporting on his death. I trust that the Nepalese authorities’ investigation into this crime will be successful and that those seeking to intimidate the media will be brought to justice.”

The Nepal Police have said that they have identified the culprits but have not been able to arrest anyone of them, and have noy been able to understand the reason for killing the media person.

Spokesman for the government of Nepal Shanker Pokharel has said that the tension between India and Pakistan is the reason for killing the media person in Nepal and Nepalese Muslims have been unsafe. However, the Indian embassy in Kathmandu has immediately refuted it.
