Respecting Fundamental Human Rights Of Tibetans
BY KTM Metro Reporter
March 9, 2011: as the anniversary of Tibetan uprising against the Chinese occupation of Tibet is approaching, the Nepalese security has been alert to the possible Tibetans holding a protest rally in Kathmandu and have stopped Tibetans from moving from one place to another and assembling at one place. March 10 is the anniversary of the botched Tibetan uprising in 1959 against the Chinese occupation of Tibet that led the Dalai Lama to flee to India.
Under the heavy pressure of the Chinese authorities, the Government of Nepal has been denying the Tibetan exiles in Nepal the fundamental human rights to a peaceful rally and march to mark the anniversary, and capturing Tibetans crossing the northern border to Nepal and returning them back to Tibet even violating the agreement the Government of Nepal has reached with the UN agency.
In a press release in Kathmandu, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the International Commission of Jurists have said today that the new Government of Nepal should respect the rights of Tibetans in Nepal to freedom of expression, assembly and association, as these rights are guaranteed for all persons in Nepal by international human rights treaties to which Nepal is a party, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).
