Sajha Buses On Roads After Twelve Years

Issue 16, April 21, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

April 14, 2013: the management of Sajha Cooperative has started off running bus services on two routes in Kathmandu on the even of the Nepal New Year 2070. Sajha has Purchased 16 news buses. The bus services start at 5:00 morning and closes at 11:00 night. Buses run at every 15 minutes at the peak hours, and at 21 to 25 minutes other times. Prices of tickets are set at 10, 15, 17, and 20 rupees depending on the distances anybody travels, according to the news on ‘gorkhapatra’ of yesterday and today.

The management of the Sajha Cooperative has done a highly commendable job reopening the Sajha bus services. The public surely would appreciate such a beautiful task of running regular bus services in Kathmandu at the time when commuters have been suffering from the monopoly of the private individuals, and groups and even a company on the public transport in Kathmandu.

Microbuses have increased sitting seats in such a way passengers have hardly any space to stretch their legs. They have stuffed passengers in microbuses. Passengers have hardly sufficient air to breadth normally. Three wheelers have heavy iron bars at the forehead level. At any bump, anybody has a chance to hit one of the iron bars and get injured. Recently, an employee of the Ministry of Finance had hit the iron bar with his head in a three-wheeler and injured his head and got killed.

Three wheelers and microbuses and golden buses have been the main transport services in Kathmandu. Buses are not regular. Microbuses and three wheelers run only after they have full passengers. They don’t run late evening not to mention late night. Commuters are at the mercy of the service providers.

Transport fares are high. Three wheelers charge Rs 15 for a short distance, the buses charge even more. The Sajha Management has set the very reasonable bus fares such as Rs 10, 15, 17, and 20.

Thanks to former Prime Minster Girija Prasad Koirala, the Sajha bus services had been ended, and the trolley bus service was totally destroyed. The revival of trolley bus service is slim but the Sajha has come to life again thanks to the entrepreneurial and socially responsibly thinking people. The reopening of the Sajha bus services have been the New Year gifts to commuters in Kathmandu.
