Reporters Stage Sit-in Demanding Security

March 4, 2010: following the direction of Federation of Nepalese Journalists on March 3, 2010, reporters of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur districts have jointly staged a sit-in protest at the office of the Kathmandu district administration against the killing of publisher of ‘Janakpur Today’ Arun shinghaniya shot dead on March 1, 2010, and demanded security for reporters and end of impunity for the killers of Jamin Shah.

The police have attempted to stop the reporters from staging a peaceful sit-in protest at the Kathmandu district administration office but later on gave in and let reporters protest at the district administration office.

Speaking at the sit-in protest, speakers have accused the government of Prime Minister Madhav Nepal not only letting the killers going free with impunity but also protecting them. So, the police have not been able to arrest the killers of Jamin Shah killed about a month ago, the killers of Arun Shinghaniya, and the culprits attempting to kill Nagender K Pampaty on March 2, 2010.

Similarly, reporters in the Sunsari district have also staged a sit-in protest against the killing of Arun Shinghaniya. They have to fight against the security police for making possible to reach the district administration office. During the clash with the security police, more than a dozen reporters were injured by the police baton charges.

On the call of the Madhesh Media Mission, reporters have taken out the funeral process of Home Minister Bhim Rawal in an effigy and cremated him in the effigy at the district administration office according to the state-run newspaper ‘Gorkhapatra’ of March 4, 2010.
