US Lawmaker Threatens To Cut Aid To Nepal

issue 45, November 6, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

November 4, 2011: Representative Frank Wolf has threatened to cut millions of dollars in US aid to Nepal unless it permits refugees fleeing Chinese rule in Tibet to transit through the country, AFP reported yesterday.

The government of Nepal has denied Tibetan exiles in Kathmandu to stage peaceful rally protesting against the Chinese rule in Tibet. A few days ago, the Nepal Police have mauled the Tibetans preparing for prying for the souls of those monks that have immolated protesting against the Chinese rule in Tibet. The Nepal Police have further tightened the activities of Tibetan exiles in Kathmandu after one of women attendees to the prayer has attempted to immolate.

After the incident of a woman attempting to self-immolation in Kathmandu, Nepal police have been searching individual houses, arresting Tibetans arbitrarily, tapping telephones of the politically active Tibetans in other words creating “curfew-like” situation in the areas of Tibetan residence in Kathmandu.

Representative Frank Wolf said that he would block funding to Nepal if it refuses to grant exit visas to Tibetans seeking refuge in the United States. Representative Wolf would propose the aid cutoff if Nepal does not improve its record on dealing with the Tibetans by the time the United States looks at foreign aid funding next year according to the AFP report.
