Consensus Government And Prime Minister Bhattarai
By KTM Metro Reporter
February 15, 2012: Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has been telling that he himself will lead a consensus government, as the representatives of the dissident group of his party are going to join his government. However, he does not bother to explain what is the consensus government except for saying the dissident group of his party is going to join his government.
Prime Minister Bhattarai also has been telling the public that the peace process will be complete by mid March of this year and then a new constitution will be promulgated as scheduled. Later on, he has said that at least a draft of a new constitution will be made public.
However, the dissident group of his own party UCPN-Maoist have been for tearing down his government and set up a new consensus government but they are shy to say what does the consensus government means and who leads it. They also don’t appreciate the major tasks of the peace process the Bhattarai government has completed sending the voluntarily retired combatants home.
President of NC Sushil Koirala has given Prime Minister Bhattarai the deadline of March 13, 2012 for completing the peace process if not quit the office. However, NC President Koirala did not define the completion of the peace process even though it has several components. Previously, NC used to focus on vacating the Maoist cantonments. Now, the cantonments will be empty soon. Truth, reconciliation and disappearances are other main components of the peace process. However, NC leaders have never talked about these vital issues.
While stating the completion of the peace process and the constitution writing, the NC and CPN-UML leaders keep in mind grabbing the power. Recently, they have been demanding the firing of a minister for his statement on the possibility of breaking away the Madhesh. However, concerned Minister Jayaprakash Prasad Gupta has already made it clear that the media reporters have distorted his statement. He has made it clear that he has actually stated that the Madheshi might break away from the regime but the reporters have made it state.
Not only the NC and CPN-UML leaders want to tear down the Bhattarai government but also the UCPN-Maoist leaders, too. UCPN-Maoist leader Dev Prasad Gurung has said that the anti-money laundering and extradition treaty and legal assistance bills introduced by the government in the legislature-parliament would not be approved at any cost, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of February 15, 2012 writes. Gurung also has said that the minister Gupta has lost the legitimacy to remain in office if he does not apology to the House for his statement on the Madhesh breaking away from the state. He also has said that a national consensus government is necessary to build trust among the political parties. Again he has failed in defining ‘the national consensus government.’
