Nizgad-Kathmandu Fast-track Highway

Speaking to the team of the ‘Rastriya Sarokar Abhiyan Nepal’ at his Baluwatar official residence on August 29, 2016, Prime Minster Prachanda said that he was the coordinator of the high-level political committee at the time of the Oli government, and he had influenced the Oli government to make the decision on Nepal itself building the ‘fast-track’; so the media report on turning over the nationally important project like the Nizgad-Kathmandu to a foreign company is nothing but rumor only, the news in ‘gorkhapatra’ of August 30, 2016 stated.

The prime minister also told the team members that he was not only not giving the Nizgad-Kathmandu fast-track highway to the foreign companies but also any other nationally important projects. Prachanda also told them that he would consult with the experts on the technical matters before going for the India visit.

Parliament Endorses SAARC Power Trade Agreement

On August 30, 2016, the parliament has endorsed the ‘SAARC Framework Agreement for Energy Cooperation (Electricity)’ signed during the 18th SAARC summit held on November 26 and 27, 2014. Following the agreement member countries such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka can trade the power in the region.

India and Bhutan do not need to get their respective parliaments ratified the agreement but Nepal needs pursuant to the Nepal Treaty Act 1990.

The news on myrepublica.com quoting the officials of the energy ministry stated that the agreement has opened up the doors for Nepal to sell its surplus energy during the rainy season to any member state of SAARC. Nepal Electricity Authority officials say that after 2017, Nepal will have surplus electricity of around 1000 to 1500 MW in the wet season. At present, India is short of about 25,000 MW of electricity. India has been maintaining that it is ready to buy any surplus energy from Nepal.

Chairman of Nepal Workers and Peasants Party Mr. Narayan Man Bijukchhe said the power trade agreement was against the interest of Nepal, according to the local media. He did not elaborate how the agreement would adversely affect Nepal. He is a wise politician. Senior politicians used to consult with him when they were at the political dead end.

Former President Yadav Suffers From Prostrate Cancer

Former President Dr Ram Baran Yadav has been diagnosed with the early prostrate cancer; if he gets the right treatment at the right hospital at the right time, he might come out of the deadly disease, his son said.

While in office, Dr Yadav had gone to Japan to check up the possible prostrate problem on the advice of the Nepalese doctors. He came out clean at that time.

The government has decided to provide the former president with NPR 6 million for the treatment. He might go to the US for the treatment.

Dr Yadav was the first elected president of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal in 2008. He had been controversial over the letter he wrote to the then Chief of Army Staff Rugmangud Katuwal stating to stay on in his position despite the then Prime minister Prachanda had fired.

In protest Prachanda quit the office only to bring the political chaos and the delay in crafting the Constitution. Currently, Prachanda has publicly accepted the fact that at that time he was not politically so matured to run the administration in the parliamentary system.
