Nepal-China Deal On Hydropower Concerns India
By KTM Metro Reporter
September 19, 2012: The Investment Board of Nepal on behalf of the government of Nepal and the CWE Investment Company of China (sub group of CTGC looking after overseas operations) signed a revised Memorandum of Understanding for construction of the 750 MW West Seti Hydropower Project (WSHP) on the Seti river in Dadeldhura district on August 27, 2012.
The estimated cost of the project is Nepalese Rs 180 billion. The project is scheduled to start this year and will complete in 2020. The WSHP has remained idle since the then government had granted a license to the Australian company called Snowy Mountain Engineering Corporation in 1997 for building the project. The company was supposed to build the project and export the energy to India but the company could never negotiate with the Indian government for the sale of power and so the project did not take off at all.
Now, the project is for the domestic consummation of the power. The local people have welcomed the project. Indians might be concerned with the Chinese contactors working very close to the Nepal-India border, and the project generating power for Nepal on its own.
