January 13, 2012: speaking at the ceremony of conferring the honorary Doctor of Literature on Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the ninth convocation of Tripura University in Agartala, India yesterday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that Bhutan, India and Nepal could use the Chittagong and Mongla Ports in Bangladesh for enhancing the trade and business among these countries and Bangladesh, according to the news posted on Thehindu.com and Ibnlive.in.com.
The Bangladeshi prime minister also has said that improved trade and business among the neighboring countries would help to eradicate the poverty that has been plaguing the people of this region.
Nepal has imported some fertilizers through the Bangladesh port: Chittagong a few months ago. How easy the import from the Chittagong port has been has not come to the public attention so far. However, it is for sure that Nepal would not need to entirely depend on the Indian port: Kolkata if Nepal could use Bangladesh ports such as Chittagong and Mongla as effectively as possible.
Prime Minister Hasina was in India for collecting the honorary degree in literature. Vice-Chancellor of Tripura University Professor Arunoday Saha has said his university has conferred the honorary D. Litt on Ms. Hasina acknowledging her contribution to peace, development and women empowerment in the region.
