Disastrous Avalanche Attributed To Tibet Crisis

Issue 40, September 30, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

September 25, 2012: the loss of lives of a number of climbers caused by the terrible avalanche at the Manaslu Mountain on Sunday, September 23, 2012 was attributed to the political crisis in Tibet, as China did not issue permits to scale up mountains this year forcing the climbers to flock to Nepal for climbing.

Recently, Tibetans have intensified their protest against the Chinese rule in Tibet that had enjoyed independence until Mao Zedong sent his People’s Liberation Army to occupy Tibet in 1949. Tibetans had attempted to liberalize Tibet from the clutches of Chinese rulers in 1959 but unfortunately they did not succeed and Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama had to take political asylum in India. Since, then he has been living in India. Recently, a number of Tibetans had burned them to death in protest against the Chinese rule in Tibet. So, the Chinese rulers did not want to see foreigners strolling in Tibet. That was why they did not issue any permits to foreign climbers to scale up Himalayan Mountains.

Therefore, most of the climbers turned to Nepal for scaling up the mountains. The government of Nepal issued as many as 30 permits to climb Mount Manaslu this year causing the crowd of climbers at Manaslu. A number of climbers were at the base camp of the Mount Manaslu when the fateful avalanche occurred and killed a number of climbers.
