Issue 36, September 6, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Recently, the doctors of one of the largest state-run hospitals in Kathmandu have called off their shutdown of the service delivery they have imposed for several days but immediately after that state-employee nurses have started shutting down their services at all the state-run hospitals, health centers and health posts across the country demanding the government to stop its interference in the nursing council. The nurses have started a protest against the government replacing the registrar of the Nepal Nursing Association.

The doctors have continued to shut down the service delivery at the state-run BP Koirala Lions Center for Ophthalmic Studies in Kathmandu.

On September 2, 2009, leaders of the All Nepal National Free Students Union-Revolutionary (ANNFSU-R) have announced to block the assembly of the Tribhuvan University’s Academic Council scheduled for September 11, 2009 if the University Council fails in ensuring the students’ presence in the assembly.

Except in the Kathmandu Valley for not blocking one of the festivals of the indigenous people, Nepalese Tharus and Muslims have started a nation-wide protest against the government not enforcing the agreements the government has reached with them effective on September 3, 2009. Tharus and Muslims have complained that the Prime Minister has been very smart to submit a proposal to the legislature for amending the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007 for making room for the Vice-president to take an oath of office again whereas he has ignored concerns of the ethnic Nepalis.

Pro-Indian Minister for Culture Mirendra Rijal has recommended the appointment of two Indian priests at the temple to Lord Shiva called Pashupati in Kathmandu disregarding the nationalistic feelings of all Nepalis. Nepalese priests have been up for protesting the appointment of Indian priests at Pashupati, and have padlocked the office of the Pashupati Area Development Fund and other offices under it.
