Giving Birth To A Federal Democratic Alliance

Issue 34, August 19, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

August 15, 2012: twenty-one political parties have announced the formation of a Federal Democratic Alliance at the event held in a hotel in Kathmandu today. The objective of the alliance is to fight for federalism and identity-based federal provinces.

NC, CPN-UML, and CPN-Maoist stayed away from the alliance. NC and CPN-UML had been against federalism and identity-based federal provinces since Nepalis had started off talking about federalism but CPN-Maoist had done so only recently, precisely after its Chairman Mohan Vaidhya Kiran returned from the 10-day China visit. Chinese leaders had told him not to go for federalism, as it would split the country into pieces. Upon arrival, Chairman Vaidhya declared that his party did not need the federalism that would split the country.

Chairman of CPN-UML nervous of the alliance said that the alliance might further polarized the political parties and ultimately led to the confrontation. Certainly, the pro-federalists would confront with the anti-federalists at any cost to keep Nepal into a single piece rather than giving in to the anti-federalists and see the country breaking down into pieces.

Vice-president of NC Ram Chandra Poudel said that the formation of the alliance was to depict the opposition coalition of NC and CPN-UML as the anti-federalism. However, he forgot to say that the opposition coalition of NC and CPN-UML was in fact against federalism and identity-based federal provinces.
