Nepal Celebrates Democracy Day
By KTM Metro Reporter
February 19, 2011: on this day in 1951, Nepalis drove the mighty autocratic Rana family rulers out of the palace and declared Nepal a democratic country but the following years, Nepalis could not protect democracy from the autocratic dynastic rulers that Nepalis had saved from extinction in 1951, and had to live under the despotic rulers for another 30 years until 1990. Again in 2005, the despotic ruler hijacked democracy and attempted on imposing the absolute rule. This time, Nepalis tore down the Shah dynasty and set up an inclusive federal democratic republic in 2006.
In 1942, the then tyrannical Rana rulers took the lives of the four people that had simply demanded the reform in the administration and education for the people and improvement in the lives of common people. These four martyrs are Sukraraj Shastri, Dharma Bhakta, Dasrath Chand, and Ganga Lal. The youngest among them was Ganga Lal. Their blood had sown the seeds of inclusive federal democratic republic that has grown to maturity in 2006. Nepalis need to save the inclusive federal democratic republic of Nepal from the predators, as it is still vulnerable to predators.
Another martyr is Ganesh Man Singh: the Supreme Leader of the Nepalese People’s Movement for Democracy in 1990. He had spent his whole life on fighting for democracy but at the time of the last moment of his life, he had endured undemocratic activities of the leaders of his own party and finally quit the Nepali Congress Party he had founded working with other colleagues.
Then, hundreds of brave Nepalis had shed their lives and luxury of living human lives during the 10-year conflict. Their courage and blood have made possible the current political achievements. So, we should not forget their contributions to make our lives better.
We need to remember the contribution made by all the martyrs that have given their lives and luxury of lives for fighting against the despotic rulers and setting up the inclusive federal democratic republic of Nepal.
