Nepal Placed 139th In Corruption Index

Issue 50, December 9, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 5, 2012: Nepal scoring 27 out of 100 secured the 139th position among the 174 countries in the Corruption Perceptions Index made public today by the Berlin Based Transparency International.

Nepal along with Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Nigeria and Kenya ranked 139th whereas Bhutan scoring 64 became the cleanest in South Asia, Sri Lanka scoring 40 trailed behind Bhutan, doing better than India that scored 36 and placed at 94th but Bangladesh scored 26 just to finish behind Nepal and Pakistan in the South Asia.

In view of the rampant corruption going on in the country, and four ministers serving the jail sentences for corruption, and one state employee after another going to jail for corruption, it is not surprise that Nepal has scored only 27. Thanks to the commendable job of finding out the irregularities and filing the corruption cases at the Special Court, the Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has been doing, Nepal could placed at 139th.

The irony is that the democratic parties such as NC and CPN-UML had contributed significantly to institutionalize the corruption in Nepal. Leaders of NC and CPN-UML getting fatter every passing year have been the clear indication of the scale of the corruption Nepalis have been shouldering.
