On January 4, 2009, representatives of the Confederation of Nepalese Industries headed by industrialist Binode Chaudhary and the Federation of Nepal chambers of Commerce and Industry headed by Kush Kumar Joshi met with the Minister for Finance at the Ministry to put up their grievances and request the minister for extending the time given for the voluntary disclosure of incomes. The business and industry communities have been opposing the voluntary disclosure of income scheme the Government of Nepal has introduced. The minister disagreed on the grievances put up by and the request of the representatives of the business and industry community rather informed them that the Finance Ministry has identified more than 3,000 business and industry persons that are liable for paying income tax and would take strong actions against them if they failed in disclosing their incomes within the deadline.

On January 5, 2009, Finance Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai left Kathmandu for Japan for an official visit.

On January 6, 2009, Minister for Home Bamdev Gautam arrived Kathmandu from Bangkok after the treatment of the ailment he had suffered from recently.

On January 5, 2009, the Council of Ministers decided to promulgate three ordinances such as 1) enforced disappearances, 2) updating voters’ list, 3) making all state agencies inclusive.

On January 5, 2009, the Army Integration Special Committee headed by the Prime Minister decided to remove all the Maoists Combatants not eligible for integration with the army from the combatants’ camps.  The total number of such combatants is 4,000. With the assistance of the national and international communities, the government will settle them elsewhere.

On January 5, 2009, the Department of Roads has opened the portion of the East-West Highway damaged by the Koshi flood in Eastern Nepal more than five months ago. Commuters do not need to travel via India to reach their destinations.

The Asian Development bank announced the doubling of its assistance from $100 million to $ 200 million for Nepal according to the State-run Radio Nepal.
