CIAA Instructs NEA Stop Providing Its Staffs With Free Electricity

Issue 48, November 27, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

November 22, 2011: Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has yesterday instructed Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) to stop providing its employees with electricity gratis.

The state-run company NEA has been providing its 10,000 staffs with about 100 units per month to each of its staffs without charge causing the loss of Rs 100 million per year.

“The NEA has an accumulated loss of around Rs 28 billion. Still, it hired temporary staff on a massive scale. The country has been reeling under acute load-shedding for the past few years and providing free electricity to its staffers in this scenario does not bode well for NEA,” ‘Republica’ quotes Acting Chief of CIAA Bhagawati Kafle.

NEA has been providing its staffs with free electricity since the NEA board made a decision on it seven years ago; previously, NEA had foot the electricity bills of its employees, ‘Republica’ quotes Chairman of NEA Balananda Poudel.
