Fast track Between Kathmandu And Hetauda

Issue 09, Februray 28, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Speaking at a function held in Hetauda on February 22, 2010, President of Federation of Nepal Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) Kush Kumar Joshi has said that the private sector is ready to take over the construction of the fast track between Kathmandu and Hetauda, and would complete the construction within two years mobilizing national and international resources; if the Government of Nepal entrusts it to the private sector then a company would be registered at the concerned state agency to work on it; he has also said that the government would not be able to construct it even after 20 years.

The Madhav Government has assigned the Nepal Army to construct this fast track; and recently decided to allow the cutting of the trees standing on the areas the fast track passes, and has also allocated Rs 100 million for this track. However, the cost of constructing the track goes well over Rs 20 billions. Most probably, the Nepal Army will spend the budget for cutting the trees only.

A French company had approached the concerned minister of the then Girija government for a license to build this fast track but the minister refused to issue a license without a kickback; so, the French private company had to forget about it.

Traveling on this fast track, travelers can reach Hetauda from Kathmandu within two hours. So, millions of travelers traveling from Kathmandu to Hetauda and vice versa would save billions of hours for traveling annually if this fast track is built. Transport operators would save billions of rupees worth of fuels, wear and tears of machine and tires annually. Currently, travelers have to spend more than eight hours for reaching Hetauda from Kathmandu, and pay high fares.
