Arrest of Tibetan Exiles in Nepal

On June 19, 2008, Nepalese police arrested Director of the Tibetan Reception Centre Kelsang Chung, President of Regional Tibetan Women's Association Ngawang Sangmi, and Vice-President of Regional Tibetan Women's Association Women's Association Tashi Dolma from their residences in Kathmandu charging them with indulging in anti-China activities in Nepal. In addition, the police arrested about 700 Tibetan exiles for attempting to hold a rally protesting the Chinese rule in Tibet.
The Police officer said that the three Tibetan leaders were arrested under the Nepal Public Security Act and could be held in custody for 90 days; other Tibetan exiles would be released as usual in the evening.
