Issue 01, January 6, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 31, 2012: The Ministry of Home Affairs stated that it has suspended three employees of the Department of Immigration working at the Kathmandu International Airport allegedly coercing a woman returned from Saudi Arabia on November 21 to pay them money, and the policeman allegedly taking the woman to a nearby hotel and raped her, according to the RSS news posted on theimalayantimes.com.

The government has taken this actions belatedly after the civil activists putting a pressure on the government otherwise the government had almost brushed off the case just giving Rs 150,000 to the victim, and almost let the criminals go free with impunity.

In a statement issued today, the UCPN-Maoist has demanded the government to bring the perpetrators of the violence against women to justice. Similarly, the CPN-UML also asked the government for taking actions against the perpetrators of violence against women and to protect the dignity of women. It is only a show off because the politicians have been ignoring the serious case of violence against women until it has got the strong publicity due to the continued sit-in protest held by the civil activist at the entrance to the residence of the prime minister.

In a statement issued today, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), said it was extremely saddened by the recurring instances of violence against women close on the heels of the 16-day campaign to fight violence against women in Nepal. NHRC informed that it is also regularly monitoring and investigating the steps taken by the government regarding the involvement of government officials and police in robbing and raping Sita Rai on November 21, including other cases of violence against women, writes Nepalnews.com.
