Changing Tone of Maoists in Nepal

Issue 46, November 16, 2008

BY KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On Monday, November 10, 2008, speaking at the inaugural function of the conference on “Democracy, Development and Peace in Asia” Prime Minister Prachanda said that the parliamentary democracy and market-led neo-liberal economic policy in the name of globalization had marginalized the poor even more.

A few days ago Finance Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattari said that the Maoists would never surrender to the capitalists and would introduce socialism in Nepal.

Immediately after coming to power in August 2008, both Prime Minister Prachanda and Finance Minister Dr. Bhattarai had said that they would not be able to ignore the wave of globalization and economic liberalization. So, they put forward the mantra of public-private partnership for economic development in Nepal.

They assured the industrialists and businesspersons of not expropriating private industries and businesses. However, a few days ago, Finance Minister Dr. Bhattarai suggested the private sector to move away from the education and health sectors.

In recent decades, foreign and national investors have made huge investments in “Teaching Hospitals” in Nepal. These teaching hospitals are the combination of both the education and health. If the current Finance Minister expropriates these teaching hospitals then their fate would not be better than the fate of State-owned teaching hospitals.
