Constituent Assembly Fails In Turning Over Subject-Matter Drafts

Issue 09, February 28, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

February 25, 2010: the Constituent Assembly (CA) has failed in turning over drafts on several subject matters to the Constitutional Committee (CC) for debate and further work on these subject matters of a new constitution; so, the CC has postponed its work on the constitutional writing indefinitely after several members of the CC Committee requested Chairman of CC Nilambar Acharya for deferring its work until the CA forwards all the drafts on various subject matters according to the state-run newspaper ‘The Rising Nepal’ of February 24, 2010.

The CA has turned over only one of the eleven drafts on various subject matters prepared and submitted by Subject-Matter Committees. The CC has completed debate on the draft and is ready for incorporating in the draft of a new constitution.

Chairman of CC Acharya has said that his committee needs at least four weeks to complete debate on all the subject-matter drafts and work on them; however the deadline for completing all these things is March 5, 2010; so it will not be able to meet the deadline.
