By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On December 17, 2009, releasing a press statement, a group of human rights activists and legal professionals have demanded the turn over of major Niranjan Basnet indicted for torturing and killing of a minor Maina Sunuwar in 2004 to the Kavre District Court for pursuing the criminal case against him.

Human rights activists and legal professionals have shown serious concern over the Nepal Army's denial of turning over Major Niranjan Basnet implicated in the torture and murder of Maina Sunuwar in 2004 to the civilian court.

At the same time, the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) has also urged the Government of Nepal to produce Major Basnet at the civilian court and end the culture of impunity in Nepal.

Amnesty International (AI) has also urged the government to immediately pursue the criminal case against Major Niranjan Basnet indicted for torturing and murdering Maina Sunuwar on February 17, 2004. Major Basnet was one of four soldiers indicted by the Kavre District Court for the killing of Maina Sunuwar in 2008.

Reportedly, Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has ordered the Nepal Army to produce Major Niranjan Basnet at the civilian court following the court summon, however, the Defense Minister and the Nepal Army have not listened to the Prime Minister for producing Major Basnet at the civilian court.
