Issue 07, February 12, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

February 9, 2012: leaders of UCPN-Maoist, NC and CPN-UML have held a meeting at the Gokarna resort yesterday to find the way out to break the current deadlock at the parliament, as the opposition particularly NC and CPN-UML lawmakers have been blocking the House session demanding the government revoke the decision on legalizing the property deals done by the Revolutionary Council of the Maoists during the insurgency. They have agreed on the government would revoke the decision but the cabinet meeting held today has simply decided not to enforce the decision again provoking both the opposition and the Vaidya group of the UCPN-Maoist.

The Vaidya group of the UCPN-Maoist has demanded the prime minister quit the office for his decision on not enforcing the property deals done by the Revolutionary Council. Secretary to UCPN-Maoist CP Gajurel has said that the only thing the current government has done is legalizing the property deals done by the Revolutionary Council but the government has changed its decision under the pressure of the opposition so the government has lost the legitimacy to run the administration; hence, the prime minister needs to quit the office immediately.

Opposition leaders were not happy with the wording of the cabinet decision. NC and CPN-UML leaders wanted the cabinet revoked the decision on legalizing the property deals done by the Revolutionary Council but the Cabinet had simply decided not to enforce the decision. So, they made consultations with the leaders of other political parties in addition, they talked to each other in the respective party before sitting at the parliament for the session today. They agreed on letting the prime minister to speak at the parliament concerning this matter.

Speaking at the parliament today, Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has said that his government has revoked the decision on legalizing the property deals done by the Revolutionary Council of the Maoists during the insurgency to the satisfaction of the opposition lawmakers that have been blocking the business of the House demanding the prime minister revoke the decision made on Jan 12, 2012 on legalizing the property deals done by the Revolutionary Council.
