Issue 06, February 7, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

February 5, 2010, the local media have reported that the UCPN-Maoist have obstructed the construction work on Arun-III, Seti and Upper Karnali Projects demanding to renegotiate the terms and conditions of these hydropower plants the Indian companies have been constructing in Nepal. They say that the agreements on these hydropower plants have been favoring the Indians at the cost of the Nepalis.

The Ministry of Energy has published the terms and conditions the Government of Nepal has reached with GMR ITD Consortium on the construction of the Upper Karnali Project in the state-run newspaper ‘Gorkhapatra’ of February 1, 2010 after the UCPN-Maoist cadres have halted the construction work on this project but has not said anything about Arun-III and Seti projects.

Minister for Energy Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat has charged the Maoist cadres halting the work on these projects of being anti-development. The Minister believes that these projects will bring prosperity but the Maoist cadres have counter charged the Minister of selling these projects out to foreigners.
