Indian Train Crash Leaves 21 Dead

September 20, 2010: Twenty-one people have died in a train crash in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The collision took place when a goods train crashed into a passenger train waiting at the Bhaderwah railway station in Shivpuri district. "The accident took place when a goods train collided head-on with the stationary Indore-Gwalior Intercity Express," a railway ministry press release said. Four coaches were damaged in the crash. The injured have been taken to civil hospitals in Guna and Shivpuri, officials said.

Railway officials said the accident occurred early on Monday when it was raining heavily. At least 30 people were injured, 10 of them seriously. Rescue operations are under way and a relief train has been sent to the site. The cause of the crash is not known.
