Maoists and Madhav Government Head-on Collision

May 10, 2010: the Maoist cadres have enforced the sit-in at all the entry points to the state secretariat in Kathmandu and at the district administration offices across the country following their movement for ‘peace and constitution’. The Maoist cadres have blocked all the entry points leading to the State secretariat Singhadurbar in Kathmandu on May 9, 2010.
Maoist cadres have peacefully blocked all entry points except for the Maitighar Mandala where the security people mercilessly have beaten not only the Maoist cadres but also anybody the batons of the security people could reach. Several security people and Maoists were injured in the scuffle. The battle started off after the Maoist cadres captured two staffs of the Department of National Investigation allegedly sneaked into their group, and turned the two guys to the human rights activists. Ministry of Home has denied that its staffs have involved in infiltrating into the Maoist cadres at Maitighar but the security forces have used the force against the Maoist cadres after they have indulged in hurting the reporters.
Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has written a letter to Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda inviting him to talks. The spokesman for the UCPN-Maoist has said that the UCPN-Maoist is going to write a reply letter to the Prime Minister soon. Speaking at the mass rally held at Tundikhel in Kathmandu, Chairman of UCPN-Maoist has said that the ball is in the Court of the government for the reactions to the calling off the indefinite shutdown. The Madhav government and the members of alliance in the governance have been saying that the Maoists need to call off the indefinite shutdown before sitting with the Maoists for any talks
Leaders of the UCPN-Maoist have been insisting on Prime Minister Madhav Nepal to resign for any talks with the parties in alliance running the government but Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has said that he is not going to resign at any cost until the UCPN-Maoist vacates the cantonments and dissolve the para-military structure of the YCL after the Maoists have called off the indefinite shutdown. On May 9, 2010, representatives of the businessmen and industrialists have met Prime Minister Madhav Nepal asking him to break the current political deadlock for paving the way to the consensus politics after the Maoists have called off the indefinite shutdown.
The meeting of the NC leaders has decided to continue to support the current Madhav government until the peace process and the writing of a new constitution are completed.
In the meeting of the ten small parties called by the UCPN-Maoist, leaders of all the parties have unanimously stated that the current Madhav government is against the peace process, federalism, secularism, and the writing of a new constitution.
