Marking 64th International Human Rights Day In Nepal

December 10, 2012: various human rights organizations have marked the 64th International Human Rights Day as the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights day performing different activities in Nepal today.
At a function held to mark the 64th anniversary of the declaration of International Human Rights Day, Chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Kedarnath Upadhyaya has said that the government of Nepal has failed in safeguarding its citizen's human rights revoking various human rights violence cases from the Courts thus letting go the criminals of human rights violence free with impunity.
In October 2012, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in its report has criticized the government of Nepal for making efforts on giving the general amnesty to the perpetrators of human rights violence and even promoting the allegedly perpetrators of human rights violence to the offices of the Nepal police and the Nepal army.
At a function held to mark the 64th International Human Rights Day in Kathmandu today, the EU Delegation has urged the government of Nepal not to grant amnesty to the perpetrators of human rights violence. The EU delegation called on Nepalese political parties to set up Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission on the Enforced Disappearance.
At the same function, British ambassador to Nepal: John Tucknott said that the Britain wished for human right guarantee in Nepal. The British ambassador said that the Britain had been cooperating in safeguarding human rights in Nepal implementing projects through DFID, and said that a recent survey showed that 81 percent of the Nepalese women were made the victims of domestic violence, the state-run news agency RSS writes.
At the same function, Danish Ambassador to Nepal Morten Jespersen said that Denmark had been working in protection of human rights during the past 20 years and called on the political leaders to work on protecting the rights of the underprivileged communities.
Finnish ambassador to Nepal Asko Luukkainen said that Finland had been cooperating with the NHRC in protecting human rights in Nepal and pledged continued support for it.
The Amnesty International Nepal held a cycle procession in Kathmandu today morning to mark the 64th International Human Rights Day. The cycle procession of about 200 members of the Amnesty International Nepal started off at the UN House, Pulchowk in Lalitpur passed through Thapathali, Maitighar, New Baneshor, Thapagaon, Bhadrakali and converged into a rally at the Basantpur Durbar Square in Kathmandu. Speaking at the rally, human rights activists warned of the threat to the human rights due to the culture of impunity developed in Nepal.
On December 7, 2012, presenting its annual report to President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav, the NHRC expressed dissatisfaction with the state of impunity and the violation of the rule of law in Nepal. According to the report, the government has not seriously taken the recommendations made by the NHRC for the protection of human rights, and the NHRC has been facing serious problems of functioning due to the lack of the support of the government, according to ‘HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE’ news of December 7, 2012.
